IAS Fall Festival 2010 Program Descriptions

Minimize
Indiana's Birds of Prey
Join the Hardy Lake park interpreter for an upclose encounter with some of the common, and not so common birds of prey that can be found within the boundaries of Indiana.  Leslie will have an assortment of Indiana's raptors, including a Bald Eagle.
Goose Pond Birding Tour
Since it's inception, Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area has become Indiana's new birding hot spot.  Sightings of all three possible ibis species, both whistling-ducks, and even Roseate Spoonbill have occurred.  Join Lee Sterrenburg and Rob Ripma for a special birding tour to this amazing wetland complex.  Note: 45 minute commute time to and from Goose Pond.
Monroe/Bloomington Area Birding Tour
Jim and Susan Hengeveld will be your guide to some of the birding hotspots in and around the Bloomington area.  Depending on where the fall birding is best, we'll likely bird near Lake Monroe, Lake Lemon, and the state forest properties that surround this area.
McCormick's Creek SP Birding Tour
For those wanting a more casual birding experience.  Brad Bumgardner will lead folks through the beautiful McCormick's Creek bottomlands in search of late warblers, fall sparrows, and some possible early winter finches.  The tour will also likely visit the Nature Center feeders.
Let's Go Birding!  A look at what adults can do to facilitate youth birding growth.
The Indiana Young Birders Club was created in 2009.  Since that time, many activities have been sponsored to bring more youth into birding.  This program will look at the successes, and failures, to getting kids outdoors and unplugged from their ipods!  Activities you can do at home and in the field will be discussed.
Radar Ornithology
With newer NEXRAD technology, birders no longer need to guess when the migrating birds have arrived.  This program will show how to read radar for bird migration so you'll know exactly when and where to go to find the birds "dripping from the trees".  We'll also look at some of the fascinating migration phenomenon that radar detects.
Ins and Outs of Nature Journaling
Terry Balenger brings an inovative look at nature journalling.  Participants will learn the basics of nature journalling, supplies to use, and how to use journalling through the seasons to better refine your bird ID.  Participants are asked to bring an item from nature (pine cone, shell, etc..) for sketching.
IAS Dinner and Keynote Program
Al Batt left last year's Midwest Birding Symposium with birders splitting their sides in laughter.  Al is an author and humorist who reflects on his growing up and birding in Minnesota.  This is not a program you'll want to miss!
Young Birders Movie Night: Hoot
Sponsored by the Indiana Young Birder's Club, here's an opportunity for youth to mingle, network, and enjoy and evening around the big screen as the IYBC shows the popular, bird related comedy, Hoot.
McCormick's Creek SP Birding Tour II
For those wanting to get out and do some more birding, join Rob for some more fall birding in Indiana's oldest state park.  This morning's tour will meet at the Nature Center, not the Canyon Inn.
The Shorebirders Twilight Zone and Freudian Birds
Join Alan Bruner and Kathy Feldman for two light-hearted skits! The Shorebirders Twilight Zone is a comical look at the confusion birders often have when identifying shorebirds.  The skit will take you through a fictional day of birding by a "rookie" and a double-talking expert. The second skit, Freudian Birds, looks at rare bird species and birding behavior discovered through editorial errors in publications.  This is a chance to poke fun at our mental slips and editorial skills. This will be an interactive presentation with audience participation.
Better Birding Photography
Steve Gifford has been wowing Hoosier birders with his bird photography.  Many examples of his work can be found in the IAS Flickr Group.  Steve will give tips and techniques that he uses to get that great bird shot during this one hour presentation.
Outdoor Photo Skills- one on one with Steve Gifford
As a followup to the IAS wrap up program, participants are invited to stay after lunch for some one on one time in the field to refine your photography skills.
