Christmas Bird Counts in Indiana

Evening Grosbeak

From December 14 through January 5 tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the Americas take part in an adventure that has become a family tradition among generations. Families and students, birders and scientists, armed with binoculars, bird guides and checklists go out on an annual mission - often before dawn. For over one hundred years, the desire to both make a difference and to experience the beauty of nature has driven dedicated people to leave the comfort of a warm house during the Holiday season.

The Indiana Audubon Society compiles information from over 50 counts throughout our state. The data is compiled and published in the Indiana Audubon Quarterly. In addition, IAS provides downloadable data to members.

Count dates are now online! Find a count near you and enjoy learning about the birds in Indiana.  If you are a count compiler and your information needs to be updated, please fill out our online form and we'll update your information soon.

Goose Pond  Dec. 17
Lee Sterrenburg This year's GOOSE POND CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT will take place on Wednesday, December 17, 2014. We always schedule on the first Wednesday in the National Audubon Society count window. Last year we did exceptionally well on the Goose Pond CBC. We recorded 104 species amid cold Arctic Vortex blast conditions on December 18, 2013. We were the only count among all 44 Indiana CBCs to top the 100 species mark. We achieved that species total partly by virtue of recording 21 species of waterfowl (even with a majority of water frozen) and 12 species of diurnal raptors including Merlin and Peregrine Falcon and 2 individual Golden Eagles. Our 12 species of Emberizidae included the only 1 Le Conte's Sparrow found on all Indiana CBCs last year.

The Goose Pond CBC is sponsored by Sassafras Audubon Society. The center of the count circle is located at the south end of GPFWA Main Pool West. The circle includes diverse habitat terrains in Greene, Sullivan, and northern Knox Counties. Our CBC has opportunities for several different sorts of birding, from walking overland much of the day to mostly car birding and roadside birding. To be placed on a team or to ask questions email Lee Sterrenburg at sterren(AT)indiana.edu. Updated on November 15, 2014.
